However, it’s the software that’s Honor 8C’s biggest Achilles’ Heel. No matter how you slice it, EMUI isn’t among the best. Animations are slow, there are a lot of duplicate apps, and whatnot. EMUI is visually-inconsistent as well; some icons are circular in shape, others are square, while some are square with rounded corners. The same goes for the notification shade and individual notification cards. To top things off, the Honor 8C comes with a slew of bloatware apps (e.g. AppGallery, Camera360), and some of them can’t be uninstalled.

Canvas, like Aurora before, it, is primarily controlled through the Nanoleaf app. You can set up colors, patterns, animations, and timers through the app. It also connects to Google Assistant, if you’d like to control the lights with your voice. But if you’d rather not use your voice or the app, you can just reach out and touch the panels themselves. One of the Canvas panels in the box has a small array of symbols on it. Through these, you can power the lights on and off, cycle through pre-loaded themes, enable music sync, and control the brightness. In fact, according to Nanoleaf, you can run these lights without ever pairing them to an app or connecting them to the internet. The local hardware features are entirely self-contained.

In December, a day after a severe coastal storm had sent seabirds darting inland, across Silicon Valley, I met Ive at the site of the future campus, a five-minute drive from Infinite Loop. Team members work twelve hours a day and can’t discuss work with friends. Each project has a lead designer, but almost everyone contributes to every project, and shares the credit. (Who had this or that idea? “The team.”) Ive describes his role as lying between two extremes of design leadership: he is not the source of all creativity, nor does he merely assess the proposals of colleagues. The big ideas are often his, and he has an opinion about every detail. Team meetings are held in the kitchen two or three times a week, and Ive encourages candor. “We put the product ahead of anything else,” he said. “Let’s say we’re talking about something that I’ve done that’s ugly and ill-proportioned—because, believe you me, I can pull some beauties out of the old hat. . . . It’s fine, and we all do, and sometimes we do it repeatedly, and we have these seasons of doing it—”
