As a big fan of Apple’s leather cases, I was excited to check out what Bellroy had in store for the Pixel 2. Since these ~$50 cases are sold on the Google Store and the packaging proudly sports the ‘made for Google’ designation, you’d imagine that the case would be at least halfway decent, but I’m appalled at how poorly it’s made.

By creating in-plane variations in the superheat temperature, the nucleation, growth, and departure of vapor has been substantially affected. Spatial ordering of the flow field allows for the efficient removal of vapor and return of liquid, accelerating the ebullition cycle and promoting the departure of bubbles. The efficient return of replenishing liquid has been seen to delay dry-out and enhance CHF up to a factor of 2x using bi-conductive surfaces. While no formal characterization of the long-term reliability of the samples has been conducted, none of the bi-conductive surfaces tested in this work have shown any mechanical failure or degradation during several hours of testing.

On the right side (below) is the power switch, a tiny round "security" button that brings up the alt-ctl-del menu, and a volume rocker. All buttons have tiny embossed markings that are difficult to see/read. On the bottom right is a protective door that covers the power and RJ45 LAN jacks. On the other side is the unit’s optional port, here used for an HDMI-in port (true serial is also an option).

When you open the packaging, you’re greeted with the wood back facing you and a strong wood smell. I’m no woodworker, but the back definitely seemed very well-done. The design is very intricate, with the mountain in the background and some trees and a hill up front. The pieces fit together perfectly, and there are no real sharp edges. I don’t see any way the woodwork could be improved. Interestingly, the inside portion of the back is hard plastic, which is probably necessary for the wood to adhere.

The new film did not show Ive’s face, but he had narrated it, and largely directed and edited it. This work was done in Apple’s design studio, which has a core team of nineteen industrial designers whose public recognition—even as their work has become unavoidable—has rarely extended beyond mentions in patent filings and affidavits. In a company with inexhaustible marketing resources, Ive’s authorship of the film suggested fastidiousness about the seductive display of his work. But it was also an assertion of ownership that Jobs himself might have appreciated. Apple’s designers have long had an influence in the company which is barely imaginable to most designers elsewhere. This power “was anointed to them by Steve, and enforced by Steve, and has become embedded culturally,” in the description of Robert Brunner, who gave Ive his first job at Apple, and ran Apple’s design group in the first half of the nineteen-nineties, before this culture took hold. Jeremy Kuempel, an engineer who interned at the company a few years ago, and has since launched a coffee-machine startup, told me that when a designer joined a meeting at Apple it was “like being in church when the priest walks in.” Now, Brunner believes, “Jony has assumed the creative soul of the company.”

However, all this rubber does make putting your phone into your pants pocket a bit more difficult, and it may not even fit in smaller pockets. But that’s the trade-off you have to make with a case this protective. Cutouts are all accurate, and the rubber around the fingerprint sensor hole actually makes scanning your fingerprint comfortable. Branding on the exterior is limited to a small ‘Speck’ logo on the top right of the back.

Upstairs, they found one of the side brick walls lined with wrought-iron diamonds, each with a hole in the center. Meyers suspects these are anchor plates, set up on the exterior walls of the neighboring brass foundry to provide additional structural reinforcement (a common element in many 18th and 19th-century buildings).

The Exec 2 is a good idea with some added flair in the form of a fabric back and a leather pocket, but it’s ultimately a usability nightmare. The cards are difficult to take out, the pocket takes up so much space that you can’t even feel the fabric back, and all of this makes the case extremely thick. If you have skinny jeans and struggled to fit the phone itself in your pockets, good luck with this monstrosity. It’s a shame that the fabric back and tactile buttons were used on a case that isn’t nicer overall. It comes in black, brown, pink, purple, red, and silver.
