“Because of this we’re seeing a trend toward maximizing the usability of the garage for more than just vehicles and yard equipment," by adding storage systems and other amenities.
The Velar sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in Land Rover’s lineup, but the new product is arguably better looking than its siblings. The design is crisp and appears chiseled from a single block of material. A more aerodynamic version of LR’s corporate grille dominates the front. The chic styling is most evident in profile where the rearward raked A-pillar and black roof provide a sporty appearance. The flush doors pulls and narrow, wraparound lights make the sides look especially sleek, too. The rear’s shape is boxier than rivals, but there’s still a hint of the arching tail that defines the coupe crossover segment.

Today’s interior designs are often seen as throwbacks to classic mid-century-modern spaces—sparse and sleek, with hardwood floors and colorful Danish chairs with tapered legs seated beside long, light-colored wood tables. The contemporary revival of this style tends to highlight these features to excess. However, photographs of restaurants from the 1950s through the 1970s reveal that interiors were opulent in the more luxurious lounges and supper clubs. Trends that today’s diners associate with luxury, such as hard surfaces and open kitchens, were, in mid-century, mainly relegated to lowbrow spaces such as cafés, cafeterias, and diners. The finest eateries—such as French and specialty restaurants, exclusive lounges, and cocktail bars—were the most highly ornamented and plush. Even high-modernist interiors made extensive use of soft goods, including cloth tablecloths, heavy drapes, carpeted floors, and upholstered seating. Across the board, mid-century restaurants had low ceilings, often with acoustic ceiling tiles.
When Meyers first visited the space in 2016, a punching bag sat in the corner, PVC piping lay upstairs, and random pieces of lumber were scattered about the floors. Old, burnt-red barn doors marked the front of the space and opened out to the street. Above them, the second story facade had seen one too many layers of paint. The latest color was a sickeningly bright turquoise.

Emily Dowdall, a researcher for Reinvestment Fund, who formerly studied gentrification while working for Pew Charitable Trusts, compares Fishtown with its neighbors like Northern Liberties and Kensington. When deindustrialization hit in the early to mid-1900s, those neighborhoods suffered, leaving behind massive empty plots of land.
The power cord that comes with Canvas is a great deal more streamlined than the one you get with Aurora, which includes a big brick in the middle and makes hiding it a little difficult. But the downside to this updated design is it supports far fewer panels out of the box. If you’re planning a large installation of 40-50 panels, you’re going to need two of these cables to make it work. Nanoleaf is working on selling more capable chargers so you can power more panels on a single panel, but it’s not something you can do right this second. And even then, it’s not the kind of limitation Nanoleaf explains particularly well in its documentation. It’s the kind of thing people are going to find out the hard way, which is not a great way to support the people spending the most on your products.
“‘Summer Wind’” is the ultimate beach house in the prime location of the Fairfield Beach Road peninsula,” listing agent Edie Baum said. “The location on the peninsula provides magical views and a private sandy beach on the Sound side and a private dock on the picturesque Pine Creek waterway on the other. Surrounded by multi-million dollar beachfront homes, the quality of this home surpasses most.”
Hankey’s words were a reminder of the difficulty in obeying Dieter Rams’s commandment about long-lasting design. In 1973, a Sony ad announced, “This could be the tape deck you’ll leave your great-grandson.” That line, similar to the theme of Patek Philippe ads, may have been wishful, but it was not yet an absurd way to talk about consumer electronics. Today, Apple’s designers, like their competitors, make machines that are almost disposable: the screens crack; the processors become outmoded. I asked if this caused discomfort, and there was a pause. Whang, the d.j., mentioned a friend who still uses a first-generation iPhone. “It’s super banged up, but it’s absolutely fine,” he said, as if the device were a war photographer’s scuffed Leica. “So the stuff absolutely lasts.”
