Private museums are mostly vanity projects. Few invent social spaces. It may be the ultimate tribute to Mr. Koolhaas and OMA to say that the Prada campus works. The plazas are poetic. The galleries are practical and varied.

Oh, and fun fact: the case is mislabeled as ‘Legion’ inside. Caseology, you should probably fix that.

Unless you’re really into mobile phone photography, I don’t imagine many of you would have heard of Moment before, but it’s been doing this sort of thing for a few years now. For the Pixel 2 XL, Moment has actually gotten ‘made for Google’ certification for the Photo Case. I can tell why, though; the case just feels so damn premium. The rubberized texture on the exterior feels fantastic in the hand and adds grip. The stained and wax-coated dark walnut insert (you can also get black canvas) looks and feels great. Not only does it add a unique touch, Moment also says the texture also allows for easier one-handed shooting. I guess that kind of makes sense, but it’s more about the look to me. The interior is lined with microsuede, which adds just a bit more protection.

Since even Shoei apparently has their face shields made by a subcontractor (see my story on MXL Industries), this was quite surprising. So when Nolan says “Made in Italy”, they really mean it!

We’re almost done on our tour of the Nolan helmet factory. Once the helmets are painted and the clear coat has been applied, they pass various stations to have the face shields, internal visors and other parts installed.

This work has shown that by imparting in-plane variations in surface temperature onto flat surfaces using low-conductivity materials, extreme increases in pool boiling heat transfer can be achieved. By tuning the wavelength of these variations to coincide with the capillary length of the fluid, a resonance-like enhancement effect is seen leading to a greater than 5x improvement in heat transfer rate at moderate superheats. The counterintuitive result by which heat transfer is increased with the addition of non-conductive materials is shown to be a product of the resulting flow field near the surface. By using temperature gradients to order the location of nucleation sites, as well as promote the formation of distinct pathways for liquid and vapor flows, HTC has been increased from 41 kW/m2K to 210 kW/m2K (at ΔT = 11 K) and CHF has been increased from 116 W/cm2 to 230 W/cm2. The principle of tailoring flow fields through variations in local surface temperature represents a novel and potentially transformative tool for the enhancement of boiling heat transfer in next-generation high heat flux applications. Bi-conductive surfaces not only produce substantial increases in performance (>5x increase in HTC shown here), but are also cheaply manufactured using traditional methods, scalable to large areas and various material, and do not contain fragile surface structures or thin coatings. As a result they are easily implementable and naturally insensitive to the degradation, mechanical failure, and fouling associated with other boiling enhancement approaches.

Another feature of today’s restaurants that greatly increases the loudness inside are open kitchens—where the making of the food is on full display. This design used to be relegated to the lowly diner. But fine-dining restaurants began to expose their kitchens during the 1970s and early ’80s; Pearlman attributes the trend to Wolfgang Puck (though he didn’t invent the idea). Puck’s restaurant Spago, which opened in 1982, was one of the first high-profile restaurants to feature a centrally located brick oven, and was met with widespread critical acclaim. Other design trends that increased the volume of eating establishments also got their start at this time, including the communal table and full-service bar dining.

A recent News-Press visit to Jones Walker found the opposite. Crews were racing – literally – to renovate the circa 1970 property. The owner could lose a HUD contract and face $250 a day in code enforcement fines for violations on over half of the 80 units.
