The drop test described in Section 516.6 of the US MIL-STD-810G mandates an item to be dropped from four feet (the height a portable item is usually held while being carried or in use) onto every possible surface or edge or corner, for a total of 26 drops. The item does not have to be turned on, it simply must still work after each drop. And if it doesn’t, the standard allows up to five items. As long as one makes it through the tests, it’s a pass. That made no sense to Xplore. After all, out there in the field users won’t have four spares. And the device may well be on when it falls. And there are tall folks, so a device may drop from higher than four feet.

The enhancements shown here have been attributed to the ability of in-plane variations in wall superheat to impart order to the resulting liquid and vapor flows, leading to high HTC and a delay in CHF. By reducing the superheat temperature in the vicinity of the low-conductivity materials, the epoxy divisions suppress nucleation and remain wetted during boiling. While this reduces the local heat transfer rate near the epoxy, it increases the global heat transfer rate over the entire surface by imparting spatial ordering and enhanced bubble dynamics. For this order to be maintained the cold epoxy divisions must remain wetted at all times. Figure 4 shows time-lapse imaging of vapor bubbles undergoing lateral coalescence, and demonstrates the ability of the epoxy divisions to remain wetted during boiling. It gets worse when you put the case on your phone. There are no buttons, only cutouts. This is fine when executed properly, like on the Spigen Thin Fit, but Bellroy has made the phone’s buttons a royal pain to use by literally just putting holes where the buttons on the phone are. Additionally, the case itself feels like it has to stretch to actually fit the phone. Again, not confidence-inspiring. From what I can tell, the only aspect of this case that can be considered ‘premium’ is the microfiber lining inside, but that’s minuscule in the grand scheme of things.

The Xplore L10 is designed to guard against dust and liquids getting inside, something that’s most easily accomplished with as few external ports and openings as possible.
