Like the kitchen, the bar also explores the possibilities that lie hidden in organic fruits and flowers while going a step further by making its own shrubs and tonics. High-speed imaging of nucleate boiling at ~10–15 W/cm2 on (a) a bare copper surface and bi-conductive surfaces with (b) N = 4 cm−1, (c) N = 6 cm−1, and (d) N = 12 cm−1 designs. For each bi-conductive surface, nucleation is seen in the center of the high-temperature copper and no lateral motion of the three-phase contact lines beneath vapor bubbles is observed. The low-temperature epoxy divisions remain wetted at all times providing ordered pathways near the surface for replenishing liquid to feed the bubble ebullition cycles. One morning in September, Ive was talking with a few friends, including Chris Martin, of Coldplay, and Stephen Fry, the British actor and writer, in a courtyard beside a community-college hall, a few miles from Apple’s headquarters, in Cupertino. He wore pale, wide pants, cut as if for a chef, and tan suède Clarks shoes, and his hair was cropped. He was maintaining a look captured in a Playmobil figure of him, which his design colleagues made as a Christmas present a few years ago. The seven-inch Ive had on sunglasses and carried an off-white Valextra briefcase. A photograph of the gift is the lock-screen image on Ive’s iPhone.

A door briefly opened, and I saw flashes of color pinned to a wall. (This, Ive later explained, was the conference room where the Apple Watch film was being storyboarded.) Then we stopped in Ive’s office, a twelve-foot square separated from the studio by a glass wall. On shelves, Ive had set his Playmobil likeness and similar gifts, along with dozens of custom sketchbooks that had padded blue covers and silver edging. On the floor, behind a Marc Newson desk, was a rugby ball. Overlapping framed images leaned against the wall: a Banksy print of the Queen with the face of a chimpanzee, and a poster, well known in design circles, that begins, “Believe in your fucking self. Stay up all fucking night,” and ends, many admonitions later, “Think about all the fucking possibilities.”

For now, the renovated carriage house on East Girard sits with a foot in several worlds. There’s the constant presence of old Philadelphia history in its worn beams, painted brick, and 1900s pulleys. There’s the much more recent past—its renovation and its rebirth in the bourgeoning craft beer and cider scene in Fishtown. And there’s its future, sitting on the less developed stretch of Girard, an indication of the neighborhood’s continuing growth, and maybe, what’s left to come.

“We are seeing people trying to get rid of clutter to make their garages more comfortable and attractive,” he said. “They are adding insulation, flat-screen TVs and ceiling fans. The garage then becomes an extension of their home, and the resale value is also amazing.”

The fast windshield angle intersects powerfully with the front axle line and flows into the Range Rover-specific floating roof design, which can be specified in either body color or Narvik Black contrast finishes. The standard panoramic roof enhances the vehicle’s exceptional interior space by allowing natural light to flood in.

When CIMA International, the U.S. importer and service center for Nolan Helmets in the U.S.A., asked if I’d like a personal tour of the Nolan helmet factory while I was in Milano for the EICMA show, I naturally jumped at the chance.

The most striking characteristic of the MagCase is its material, aramid. Kevlar is based on this stuff, so it’s definitely pretty strong. That being said, the case is still very thin and doesn’t offer a lot of coverage, leading me to worry about how it’d fare in a drop. The lip doesn’t even extend past the display. The case has a nice soft-touch finish and it’s pretty lightweight, though it is somewhat of a fingerprint magnet.
