If there’s a case brand that everyone and their grandmother’s heard of, it’s OtterBox. The company has become famous for producing heavy-duty, yet pricey cases. Arguably its most popular case, the Defender, is now available for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL. But unless you work on a construction site or in some other physically tasking environment, there are better options.

Looking for exterior components that were ‘robust, stylish, long-lasting and hard-wearing’, homeowner Peter Jennings explained: “We worked with a local architect on the original concept but used our own experience of property development for the details of the property. The cladding feature was originally specified as timber, but with a busy professional and home life it was critical to make this home as low maintenance as possible. We were introduced to the Freefoam cladding range from a local supplier, Revival Building Products, and immediately liked the X-Wood range. We thought the woodgrain finish was exactly right for our project and the oak shade complemented the white and grey external elements perfectly.”

Coming to the edges, the top is home to a 3.5mm audio port, while the bottom is where you’ll find the micro-USB port and a mono speaker. There’s a triple-slot tray (two nano-SIM cards and one microSD card) on one side, with the power button and volume rocker being on the other.

The Velar sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in Land Rover’s lineup, but the new product is arguably better looking than its siblings. The design is crisp and appears chiseled from a single block of material. A more aerodynamic version of LR’s corporate grille dominates the front. The chic styling is most evident in profile where the rearward raked A-pillar and black roof provide a sporty appearance. The flush doors pulls and narrow, wraparound lights make the sides look especially sleek, too. The rear’s shape is boxier than rivals, but there’s still a hint of the arching tail that defines the coupe crossover segment.

Most of the work, like the vinyl strips on the side, the window screens, the paint and upholstery, has been done by friends back in Idaho.

Cutouts are pretty good – the fingerprint sensor is perfectly accessible, the camera isn’t blocked, and there’s adequate space for a USB-C cable on the bottom as long as it’s not massive. The lip is adequate, though a glass screen protector might end up being thicker than it. The volume buttons are tactile, if a bit too recessed. The power button, however, ruins the whole case for me. UAG chose to put a flap about twice as long as the actual power button, and it’s hinged in the center. That means that you have to press directly on the center of the button to be sure that it’ll turn your screen on and off. Press too far up or down, and the button simply won’t activate unless you push really, really hard. It’s an infuriating design, and I’d say that about 50% of the time I press the power button, I’m greeted with nothing. The case itself is also harder than it should be to install and remove.

You wouldn’t know the DualPro is a dual-layer case unless you looked at it closely. Unlike with other two-layer cases, the DualPro’s seams are very tight, and the case doesn’t try to look tough. The similarity in color between the two layers doesn’t hurt, either. The bottom layer is made of silicone, and the top is a hard plastic with a soft-touch coating. That coating makes the DualPro comfortable to hold, though it does yield fingerprints more easily than other cases. Overall, though, this is a premium-feeling case.
