Let me describe what I hear as I sit in a coffee shop writing this article. It’s late morning on a Saturday, between the breakfast and lunch rushes. People talk in hushed voices at tables. The staff make pithy jokes amongst themselves, enjoying the downtime. Fingers clack on keyboards, and glasses clink against wood and stone countertops. Occasionally, the espresso machines grind and roar. The coffee shop is quiet, probably as quiet as it can be while still being occupied. Even at its slowest and most hushed, the average background noise level hovered around 73 decibels (as measured with my calibrated meter).

The process for manufacturing a polycarbonate helmet shell is completely different than the process for making a composite shell. Both require technical expertise, manufacturing technology and a large capital investment, but the investment focus is different in each case.

The differences are mostly in features and price. A 40″ TV is under $200 at Walmart right now. Monitors anywhere near that large tend to be 4k or curved and so command a premium, most are at least $400, closer to $600 or more. A television has a tuner and a user interface that may be useless without a remote control, a monitor has a resolution appropriate for it’s size at a viewing distance of an arm’s length, no tuner, and a UI that is set with buttons on the device and then forgotten forever. A television tends to have some analog input options for composite and split video signals along with HDMI, while a monitor will tend to have an RGB input (VGA) if any analog, as well as some displayport or DVI ports in addition to HDMI if present.

Every Range Rover Velar is equipped with a responsive and smooth eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with paddle-shift controls. Four-cylinder engines are matched to the 8HP45 transmission, which feature an integral pendulum damper. This device dramatically reduces the booming and vibration typically experienced when running in high gears at low engine speeds, and therefore contributes to a quiet, refined cabin.

One thing that didn’t make it through the transition was some of Hudson’s racing memorabilia, which included a picture of Jeff Gordon from his first year with NASCAR, but it wasn’t because of storm damage. He said his staff figured Hudson is “a better business man than a decorator.”

Optimized friction and inertia compensation algorithms ensure completely intuitive steering responses, and an active return system promotes a natural self-centering effect as the steering returns to the straight-ahead position. The variable-ratio system also ensures that the driver benefits from greater responsiveness the more they turn the wheel.

Located in the instrument panel’s horizontal beam, the upper touchscreen’s menu is divided into three panels: navigation, media and phone. Interaction is as intuitive as using a tablet or a smartphone: swiping across the screen to change between menus, pinching to zoom in and out, and pressing and scrolling across the screen to pan across maps1.
