The basic L10 tablet is visually almost identical to Xplore’s older and existing 10-inch class tablets, but that’s misleading as the L10 is a far more powerful design. Boiling heat transfer is used in many applications, including the production of electricity, chemical processing, and high-heat flux thermal management. Due to its prevalence, and the important role it plays in numerous industries, the enhancement of boiling heat transfer has been studied for decades. During boiling, heat is transferred from a hot surface to a cooler fluid by (1) evaporation across liquid-vapor interfaces, (2) transient conduction, and (3) the micro-convection generated by the nucleation, growth, and departure of vapor bubbles1,2. The efficiency of boiling is quantified by the heat transfer coefficient (HTC), defined as the ratio of the surface heat flux to the superheat temperature, the temperature difference between the solid and the saturated fluid. During boiling, there is a finite rate at which heat can be dissipated from any surface. This maximum is the critical heat flux (CHF). CHF, also referred to as the boiling crisis, occurs when the production of vapor cannot be adequately balanced by the amount of liquid returning to the heated surface. When this occurs the surface undergoes dry-out, where an insulating layer of vapor blankets the solid surface. This leads to an immediate, uncontrollable, and drastic increase in surface temperature with dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences, such as the destruction of electronic components or the meltdown of a nuclear reactor.

Bob Mansfield, a former senior hardware engineer at Apple, who is now semi-retired, recently described the pique that some colleagues felt about Ive’s privileged access. As he put it, “There’s always going to be someone vying for Dad’s attention.” But Mansfield was grateful for Ive’s cool handling of a C.E.O. who was “not the easiest guy to please.” Mansfield’s view was “Jony puts up with a lot, and, as a result of him doing it, people like me don’t have to.”

Acousticians can be expensive, and many retail designers figure that they can get away without one. Worse, commercial architectural acoustics has historically involved designs that offend architects and business owners—think of those dowdy dropped ceilings of mid-century schools and offices. For glossy retail spaces and fancy restaurants, they were too much of a drag. But then again, so were hoity-toity fine-dining establishments 40 years ago, when the shift to today’s dining din began.
