In an environment of dust sheets and undecorated walls, a bag of Whole Foods nuts, on a shelf, makes a loud claim for attention. But the room’s minimalism derives from nondisclosure more than from dogma. Ive’s aesthetic is not austere: one could think of the work done here as a reticent man’s idea of exuberance, with rapture expressed in the magnetic click of a power adapter. Richard Seymour, a British designer who has known Ive for years, recently referred to his friend’s “emotionally warm modernism.” Clive Grinyer, a friend and former London colleague of Ive’s, said, appreciatively, “He’s always been a bit bling.” Paola Antonelli, the senior curator of design and architecture at MoMA, who has added many Apple products to the museum’s collection, praised an innovation that indicated when a closed laptop was in “sleep” mode: a light glowed on and off twelve times a minute, like a restful person breathing. “Jony knows that I was transfixed,” she said. “They had to abandon it because it kept people awake when it was on the bedside table.” (Apple disputed this explanation.) “It was round and pulsating and it was just amazing.”

The Honor 8C isn’t a bad smartphone; none of Honor’s (and by extension, Huawei’s) smartphones are. It looks funky, has a lightweight yet sturdy build quality, and the battery life is awesome. But when you factor in disadvantages like underwhelming cameras and a frustrating software experience, the overall package becomes far less appealing.

The 2.0-liter engine features an inherently efficient, low friction design, and benefits from technologies such as a split-cooling system and electronically-controlled coolant pump for rapid warm-up8. Variable exhaust cam timing further assists the after-treatment system to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible.

And ignoring India, it hasn’t been. Of late, Huawei’s approach towards the Indian market has been quite aggressive. In fact, the company recently brought its top-of-the-line Mate 20 Pro flagship to Indian shores. However, when it comes to the price-conscious Indian smartphone market, the real action is in the budget and mid-range segments. And that, is where Honor comes into the picture.

The wall lights have been custom made in brass, a leather band and a glass globe that appears to be floating. The raw materials of pinewood, chipboard and birch ply are softened with delicate cut-glass and brass lights, raw silk lampshades, and large bevelled mirrors that make you feel like you have entered a sleek yesterday lounge, sans the bling and glamour.

Other aspects of the case are great as well. The buttons are very tactile, just as they should be. The cutouts for everything are nothing special, but they’re well-designed and don’t intrude on anything. There’s even a lanyard holder, though nobody outside of Asia uses them and you’ll have to buy it separately. Branding is restricted to some small ‘Ringke’ text on the bottom right of the back. I really don’t have much to complain about here.
