The last time I bought/used a Ringke case was when I got my Nexus 5. I haven’t seen any of the company’s offerings lately, and quite honestly, I thought they’d gone bust. But many of you seem to be enjoying your Ringke cases, so we reached out to them for some review units. I was pleasantly surprised with them. Let’s start off with the Bevel.

Of all the case companies there are out there, Incipio seems to enjoy partnering with other companies and designers the most. Figure 1a–d shows the bi-conductive surfaces fabricated and tested for the current work. Grooves were first machined into copper substrates and subsequently filled with a two-part high-temperature epoxy. After curing the entire part was sanded by hand to remove excess epoxy, resulting in flat surfaces with lines of epoxy dividing the copper into parallel strips. Bi-conductive surfaces were fabricated with a varying number of epoxy divisions per centimeter, N. Figure 1a shows optical images of the N = 2 cm−1 and N = 12 cm−1 designs. In total, seven distinct surfaces have been fabricated and tested including a bare copper surface and bi-conductive surfaces with N = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cm−1. Figure 1b–d shows scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the embedded epoxy divisions which have a measured width of 420 ± 5 μm, depth of 290 ± 23 μm, and center-to-center pitches of P = 0.96–3.7 mm.

I liked the implementation Xiaomi has gone with – which is a lot more like what you’d find on an iPhone – in comparison to Google’s setup, but one gripe I had was with the ‘back’ gesture. That’s triggered by swiping in from either edge of the screen. Since Android apps more often than not hide a hamburger menu and require you to pull it out from the left side of the screen, you’ll find yourself going back instead of pulling out the menu more often than not. The same is true when you’re trying to swipe away notifications and instead end up closing the notification pane. To avoid that, Xiaomi reserves the lower half of the screen for the back gesture and the top half for the app but on a screen as large as this, it’s rather hard to successfully pull it off every time. As bezel-less displays become more common in the Android space, I really hope that either the app ecosystem will evolve vis a vis hamburger menus or that Xiaomi and others will be able to find a better implementation for gestures.

The shell mold consists of a highly polished metal mold of the helmet that is surrounded by several moving parts that have the same shape.

I’ll be honest: my first impression of the Exec 2 was not very positive. The case is a lot thicker than most inherently, and the cardholder on the back only makes things much worse in that regard. Plus, the cardholder looks rather cheesy – almost like something a five-year old would think looks ‘cool.’ The leather looks fake (even though it’s supposedly real), there are 12 silver squares on it for visual effect, and the Ghostek branding really shouldn’t be on there.
