In use, the Kate Spade feels practically identical to the Oh Joy!, save for the harder back and the little plastic crystals in the flowers if you opt for the ‘Hollyhock Floral’ option. The frame is still TPU, so it’s grippy and absorbs shock, but the hard back makes it feel more premium, I guess. It’s all a matter of taste. The buttons are equally clicky, and the cutouts equally precise.
Today’s interior designs are often seen as throwbacks to classic mid-century-modern spaces—sparse and sleek, with hardwood floors and colorful Danish chairs with tapered legs seated beside long, light-colored wood tables. The contemporary revival of this style tends to highlight these features to excess. However, photographs of restaurants from the 1950s through the 1970s reveal that interiors were opulent in the more luxurious lounges and supper clubs. Trends that today’s diners associate with luxury, such as hard surfaces and open kitchens, were, in mid-century, mainly relegated to lowbrow spaces such as cafés, cafeterias, and diners. The finest eateries—such as French and specialty restaurants, exclusive lounges, and cocktail bars—were the most highly ornamented and plush. Even high-modernist interiors made extensive use of soft goods, including cloth tablecloths, heavy drapes, carpeted floors, and upholstered seating. Across the board, mid-century restaurants had low ceilings, often with acoustic ceiling tiles.
Buttons here are different from those on any other Spigen case. The power button is ridged, keeping it from getting confused with the volume buttons. The volume buttons don’t actually protrude from the body like most do, but because they wrap around the side of the phone, they’re still easy to press and tactile. There’s nothing too noteworthy about the fingerprint sensor and camera cutouts, though the recess for the fingerprint sensor does have a glossy accent.

There are several cases with wood for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on the market, some of which I’ve reviewed in this roundup. But none of those cases are made entirely of wood like KerfCase’s are. KerfCase is a company based out of Pittsburgh that prides itself on crafting its cases out of a single block of wood for each, giving them a handcrafted feel that very few others can boast. Even though you’ll have to pony up quite a bit more cash for a KerfCase than most other cases, it’s worth it for the high-quality product that you get.
“In a world where almost everything needs to be ‘personalisable’, we want to provide customers with something unique to help their brands rise above the noise and reach the shopper”, said, Charles Brand, Executive VP, Product Management and Commercial Operations at Tetra Pak. He added, “The new suite of effects and expressions will help our customers enhance their brand at no additional investment, making it a cost-effective solution to their needs.”
Later that morning, Apple was announcing new products and services, at the kind of event that the company, like a fashion house, stages a few times a year. Of a thousand attendees expected, a few dozen had been invited to the backstage courtyard. Among the guests were Rupert Murdoch; Kevin Durant, of the Oklahoma City Thunder; Marissa Mayer, of Yahoo; Jimmy Iovine, the C.E.O. of Beats; and the rapper and entrepreneur Sean Combs. (Fry later referred, fondly, to “Snoop Seany Sean,” who was gracious when Fry nearly soaked him with a spilled drink.) That day, a hundred assembly lines in Zhengzhou, China, were turning out still secret new iPhones at a reported rate of seventy-five hundred an hour, and rumors about new Apple products, including a watch, were being posted online at nearly the same pace. Tim Cook, Apple’s C.E.O., was somewhere nearby, preparing to speak to a hall full of enthusiasts and reporters, and to millions online. But Ive’s role was limited largely to drinking coffee in misty sunshine. Jobs excused Ive from most public-speaking duties, and he has held on to the dispensation.
Sharp edges aside, the rest of the case is fantastic. The buttons are tactile and easy to push, which unfortunately can’t be said of every case. Cutouts for the camera and fingerprint sensor are well-done, and the gloss black accents surrounding them are a nice touch. The Caseology logo is small and subtle, and the little feet on all four corners of the back prevent the back from getting scuffed up when you put it down. The inside has an interesting pattern to prevent dust from getting squished and possibly scratching your phone up, which an increasing number of cases have these days. The lip is large enough to clear a glass screen protector.
The molding process for the helmet shells and the face shields is very similar, with only a different shape mold to make the visors.
“The biggest thing is to bring in more lighting,” he said. “Garages often have LED lighting, and we add brighter lighting as well as additional outlets, especially around work surfaces so you can plug things in.
Adding epoxy divisions and therefore reducing the area available for heat transfer by ~18%, results in up to a 5x increase in heat transfer rate at a given superheat. This result is explained by examining the nature of the bubble nucleation, growth, and departure process. The addition of non-conductive epoxy imparts order to the resulting vapor and liquid flows, which helps draw cool liquid to the surface and promotes departure of nucleating bubbles. While less of the surface area is available to transfer heat, this spatial order enhances the ebullition cycle and also delays dry-out. Figure 5 shows with the addition of two and four epoxy divisions per centimeter (N = 2 cm−1 and N = 4 cm−1 designs), the heat transfer rates steadily increase as compared to the bare surface. The performance enhancement reaches a maximum at a Bond number of unity, = 1, and then decreases for smaller Bond numbers (N ≥ 6 cm−1). As the Bond number decreases, two factors affecting performance arise. First, the pitch between the epoxy divisions becomes smaller than the nominal bubble departure diameter, and secondly, the effect of surface tension becomes more pronounced. For N ≥ 6 cm−1 bubbles grow to diameters wider than the pitch between epoxy divisions before they can depart. This impedes the counter flow of cooler liquid returning to the surface and disrupts the desired spatial ordering of flow fields. Additionally, for BoP < 1 the effects of surface tension on the bubble departure process is evident, where the non-wetted base area beneath a bubble can grow to the entire width of the copper section (see supplementary movies). This is particularly evident for the N = 12 cm−1 design, which has a Bond number of BoP = 0.13, and shows performance worse than bare copper. In this case, the reduction of area available to conduct heat and the adverse effects of surface tension have outweighed any potential improvements associated with ordered flows. A decrease in HTC and CHF of approximately 25% as compared to a bare copper surface is seen.
As a case, the Thin Fit is less than ideal. It’s pretty much just a hard plastic shell. The top and bottom are both exposed to the elements, which could be fatal in the event of a drop. For the sake of minimalism, it doesn’t even have buttons – just cutouts. Yet in spite of all this, I still find myself using it pretty often. Whereas the Thin Fit for the Galaxy S8 (and probably other phones) covered all the edges, this one leaves the top and bottom wide open. Thankfully, the case does wrap around the bottom half of the phone, but you’re still screwed if your phone falls the wrong way down. The button cutouts aren’t my favorite since the case’s frame gets a little in the way of them, but I still prefer them to spongy buttons. The cutouts for the camera and fingerprint sensor are precise, adding to the general look of the minimalist case.
