Surfaces were characterized using a custom-built test set-up as previously reported by Rahman et al.14,19. The setup consists of a copper heater block with PTFE insulation embedded with two cartridge heaters allowing for a maximum power of 1,000 W. Five T-type thermocouples were inserted into the copper block equally spaced 6 mm apart with the top most thermocouple located directly beneath the sample. The temperature measurements were recorded using NI DAQ system, where the average heat flux in the copper block was calculated using Fourier’s conduction law. The sample surface temperature was calculated by considering all of the relevant thermal resistances between the surface and the top most thermocouple, as described. A polycarbonate chamber was used as the water bath; with an immersion heater and thermocouple probe maintaining saturated conditions and atmospheric pressure. Degassed, deionized water was used as the working fluid, and all tests were carried out up to CHF. Visualization of the boiling process was conducted at low heat fluxes using a Phantom V210 high-speed camera (Vision Research) recorded at 3,100 fps. The surfaces were initially maintained at saturated condition for 1 hour after which a small increment of heat flux (2 W/cm2 to 5 W/cm2) was applied to the surfaces until the nucleation was observed. Heat flux was further increased up to 20 W/cm2 until the visibility of bubble dynamics becomes difficult. The chamber heater was turned off to minimize the bulk fluid motion while capturing the movies, with all movies being recorded within one minute to maintain saturation conditions, as described by Mukherjee and Dhir30 and Son et al.38.

Helmet shells then go to the decal shop to have the decals applied. The shop is climate controlled and is rather warm and humid to allow the best environment for the decals to stick to the helmet:

At the MSRP of $29.99 on Incipio’s site, the DualPro is a decent buy. It gets everything right, and it has a level of fit and finish that I feel makes it deserving of that price point. But over on Amazon, a DualPro for the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL can be had for as little as $15 if you’re willing to live with the boring black color. The navy blue I have here, the red, and the gunmetal are all sitting around $20, with the merlot color still around the $30 MSRP. I’d imagine most of you will go for one of the former, and $20 is a very good price for a case of this caliber. It’s a great all-rounder.

Bob Mansfield, then closely involved in the watch project, said that Ive’s role was to be “himself and Steve” combined. In parts of the world already filled with smartphones, that price may give the Apple Watch the graduation-gift appeal that, according to Brunner, Beats consciously sought with its headphone pricing. But Ive’s solid-gold models, innocently named Apple Watch Edition, are expected to cost many thousands of dollars. John Gruber, an influential Apple blogger, has written that the prices may be “shockingly high . . . from the perspective of the tech industry,” but perhaps “disruptively low from the perspective of the traditional watch and jewelry world.” Sebastian Vivas, the director of a watch museum maintained by Audemars Piguet, the Swiss manufacturer, recently described his industry as unperturbed by Apple’s plans: “We’re not afraid; we’re just a little bit smiling.” It would be a greater threat, he told me, if men widely accepted that they could wear gemstones without a time-keeping pretext.

Yikes. Great idea, poor execution. Really needs a glass (or plexi) cover over the whole thing. TV’s too small. This is gonna be impossible to clean, and spills will be redirected straight where you don’t want them to go.

Typically, Robert Brunner explained, design had been “a vertical stripe in the chain of events” in a product’s delivery; at Apple, it became “a long horizontal stripe, where design is part of every conversation.” This cleared a path for other designers. In 2007, Brunner formed his own consultancy, Ammunition, and began working with Beats, a new headphone company founded by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. Brunner’s firm was integrated into the Beats process to a degree that was made possible, he said, by Apple’s example. Ive, Brunner said, had “single-handedly elevated our craft to a level that it’s never been at before.”

Ultimately, I would have to caution against buying the Atomic, especially given its higher $29.99 price. The design is a little odd-looking, and the buttons are plain annoying. Keep in mind that a single drop onto concrete or some other hard surface will surely leave some noticeable marks on the metal frame, if that was your reason for buying one. If you do want an Atomic, you can have your choice of six colors for the metal piece: black, gold, pink, red, silver, and teal. (The Pixel 2 version doesn’t seem to be on Amazon.)
