Nine distinctive wheel designs ranging from 18- to 22-inches with a choice of four finishes are available. Standard models are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. S models upgrade to a 19-inch wheel, SE models move up to a 20-inch wheel and HSE models increase to a 21-inch wheel as standard. On models above the standard trim level, customers can specify up to 22-inch alloy wheels, which form part of the First Edition model’s comprehensive standard equipment.

Located in the instrument panel’s horizontal beam, the upper touchscreen’s menu is divided into three panels: navigation, media and phone. Interaction is as intuitive as using a tablet or a smartphone: swiping across the screen to change between menus, pinching to zoom in and out, and pressing and scrolling across the screen to pan across maps1.

First a few words about Xplore Technologies Corp. of Austin, Texas. They have been making rugged tablet computers for over two decades and they have sold hundreds of thousands of them. It all started with the GeneSys line of ultra-ruggeds. In 2003 came the anvil-tough iX104 family that is now in its 6th generation. In 2013 Xplore introduced the Android-based RangerX tablet, followed by the Bobcat, a Windows version of the same platform. In early 2015 Xplore took over Motion Computing and added that tablet pioneer’s experience and their R12 and C5/F5 tablet products. Then came the XSLATEs B10 and D10, updated and more powerful versions of the Bobcat and RangerX. Last year Xplore pioneered the use of PCIe storage in rugged tablets. There’s a long history of of good design and innovation.

The Defender is easily the biggest case that will be featured in this roundup. It’s thick, it’s wide, and it’s heavy. This is all thanks to the dual-layer design, which comprises a rubber external layer and a two-piece polycarbonate frame. The rubber layer features textured panels on the left and right sides for improved grip, as well as some prominent OtterBox branding on the back. However, the polycarbonate bit is extremely hard to take apart due to the clips it’s held together with and the sheer brittleness of the material; every time I (attempt to) remove the case, I feel like I’m going to break something. That’s not something you’d expect from a case of this caliber. It does pass OtterBox’s Certified Drop+ Protection standards, so I wouldn’t be worried about punting it around once the rubber layer is wrapped around the outside. The soft layer inside the polycarbonate frame likely helps with that.

Otherwise, manufacturing polycarbonate and composite helmets is about as different as a Harley-Davidson Road Glide Custom is to an Aprilia RSV4R!
