If there’s a case brand that everyone and their grandmother’s heard of, it’s OtterBox. The company has become famous for producing heavy-duty, yet pricey cases. Arguably its most popular case, the Defender, is now available for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL. But unless you work on a construction site or in some other physically tasking environment, there are better options.

The picture on the right was taken with our FLIR ONE Pro thermal imaging camera. It’s an infrared picture of the Pentium N4200 version (top) and the Core i7-8650U version both running the PassMark benchmark suite. The higher thermal load of the powerful Core processor is plainly obvious, as is the heat emanating from its fan vent. That’s the difference between a thermal design power of 6 watts and one of 15 watts.

Understanding and improving HTC and CHF in boiling systems has been extensively studied for decades, including the development of a variety of enhancement strategies3,4. Traditionally, the use of enhanced surfaces has been primarily focused on the creation of structures and complex geometries machined into, or attached onto, the boiling surface such as porous materials, sintered wires and meshes, as well as mechanically deformed structures5,6,7. With the development of increasingly precise fabrication tools, micro/nano-structured surface coatings have been explored in recent years, showing substantial increases in boiling performance. A variety of microscale and nanoscale wires, rods, posts, and other structures have been fabricated on silicon chips and shown to enhance HTC and CHF of water anywhere from 50% to 300%, depending on the working fluid8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16. Similarly, micro/nano-structures on copper and other metals have also been demonstrated1,17,18,19. The role that surface structures play in boiling enhancement has been attributed to a variety of factors, including capillary wicking9,12,13,14,17, increased nucleation site densities9,20, and increased contact line pinning10. Additionally, notable increases in HTC have been reported using embossed copper microstructures with specific contoured shapes1. These complex microscale shapes use evaporation momentum force to promote the separation of liquid and vapor flow paths and enhance micro-convection.

LifeProof has been producing rugged and waterproof cases for longer than I remember. Back in the days of when only the most rugged-looking phones were water-resistant, they made a great business case for themselves, but with the recent influx of water-resistant devices, they’ve become a little less relevant. Nevertheless, because of the difference between water-resistance and waterproofing, the case might still be worth buying if you’re an extremely active person.
