Inevitably, Ive is a co-designer of his house; according to Cook, he is playing the same role with the new headquarters. Apple loves its architects, Cook said, but “you can’t outsource your brain.” The building should express “the way we look at the world.”

Then, one day, all the clutter is gone. He laughed: “It’s just the winner, basically. What we collectively decided is the best.” The designers spend much of their time handling models and materials, sometimes alongside visiting Apple engineers. Jobs used to come by almost every day. Had I somehow intruded an hour earlier, I would have seen an exhibition of the likely future. Now all but a few tables were covered in sheets of gray silk, and I knew only that that future would be no taller than an electric kettle.
Once the mold sprue is removed (there was only a tiny piece of it because the Nolan molding process is very accurate), the shell is staged for the next stop in the process: sanding and paint or decal preparation. This is illustrated in the video.

The tables are made of birch wood and marble, and leather is used extensively on furniture, with minute attention paid to details of flaps and tufting. Crate wood panelling on the bar front, brightly coloured tiled floors, textured glass, embossed ceilings, and mild steel exposed to a natural rusting process, all evoke a feeling of comfort and timelessness.
