The 360-degree Parking Aid2 assists drivers with maneuvering the vehicle into tight spaces. Cameras located around the car are automatically triggered when Reverse is selected, or can be manually activated, with a graphic appearing on the touchscreen showing an overhead view of the car. The touchscreen display and audio feedback indicates the proximity of obstacles.

Without it, the site first opened to the public in 2015. It featured about 120,000 square feet of new or reconfigured exhibition space; a new cinema; a new two-story Miesian pavilion of wide open gallery spaces, called the Podium, the whole building clad in light, shimmery panels of foamed aluminum, an automotive and medical industry material also used for bomb blast absorption that looks a little like rough stone. There was even a 1950s-style Italian cafe straight out of a Wes Anderson movie.

The Liquid Crystal is a well-made case for the most part. Buttons are among the best I’ve pressed; cutouts for the charging port, fingerprint sensor, and camera are accurate; and the TPU material feels nice in the hand. The Air Cushion technology traps a little bit of air in each corner to allow for less abrasive impacts. How do you know it’s called Air Cushion technology, you ask? Because Spigen felt the need to put it on the top of the case in large white lettering, which absolutely should not be there on a clear case. Sure, if you have a panda Pixel 2 XL, you might not be able to see it as well, but it’s definitely there. In order to achieve this elegant simplicity, inside, designers relied on a new InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system; the centerpiece of the vehicle’s interior. Touch Pro Duo features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens2 integrated seamlessly behind hidden-until-lit surfaces. These slim, intuitive displays work in harmony with the cabin architecture while adding an overall sense of modernity congruent with the vehicle’s reductive exterior design approach. All of this is equaled by the vehicle’s practicality: luggage compartment volume is 34.4 cu. ft. behind row two.

They may have gone with a TV because it’s typically easier to find a TV with a viewing angle usable for table top viewing than a monitor. I built a lovely monitor mount for a coffee table I had rebuilt. Did all of the setup and fit testing with an unplugged monitor. Turned the finished product on only to find out that you could barely see anything unless you were standing directly over it. Waah waaaaaah.

When CIMA International, the U.S. importer and service center for Nolan Helmets in the U.S.A., asked if I’d like a personal tour of the Nolan helmet factory while I was in Milano for the EICMA show, I naturally jumped at the chance.

If such experiments can enter into the mainstream, however, they first have to be proven in the field. It is here that the Swiss context of this project becomes significant. For Switzerland has a long tradition of supporting Genossenschaften, housing cooperatives that build collective housing, and in return, are granted free land by the state. The Genossenschaften, much like the housing projects of Red Vienna, became prominent after the First World War. In the last ten years, Genossenschaft projects, insulated from the austerity that has constricted developments elsewhere in Europe, and benefitting from Swiss political structures that encourage small, autonomous community organizations, have become test beds of spatial experimentation. Overwhelmingly, these experiments have been carried out within the plan. As Christian Inderbitzen, of Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin architects, told Emma Letizia Jones and Philip Shelley: “The importance of the floor plan—that’s something that needs to be pointed out. The floor plan in a housing project determines the life that can happen, or not happen. It’s crucial.” Until now, in contemporary Swiss architecture, the plan has been the main site of contest, and it is through the plan that the power relations within the house become legible. The plan, it seems, is where power can be deconstructed, and reconstructed. Politics, implicitly, has its truth in the plan. The façade, also true to its name, is all about rhetoric. In the hermeneutics of architectural suspicion, the façade presents myth, and the floorplan its underlying truth. Elevations, ignored in this debate, threaten to disappear. But precisely because elevations are not so hotly pursued, they yield more. The more we look at them, the more that they reveal about our memories, our expectations, about media history, architectural vernaculars, and the future of the discipline.

Buttons are a little more difficult to press than is ideal, but they’re not terrible and they’re still tactile. The plastic flap for the charging port makes space a little limited down there, but the stock charger fits in without issue. I did test it out by rinsing it with the phone inside under a sink and submerging it, and no water got in aside from some tiny drops on the charging port flap’s gasket (which means it did what it was supposed to do). The case is rated for IP68 water and dust protection (the Pixel 2 XL comes with IP67) and MIL-STD-810G certification. I’d feel confident if I dropped my phone onto asphalt or into water with the FRE on. In fact, the FRE is actually rated even against saltwater since it completely insulates the phone from the outside world.
