According to Clive Grinyer, “Jon’s always wanted to do luxury.” By this point, Grinyer said, Ive had already fulfilled one duty of industrial design: to design a perfect stapler, for everyone, in a world of lousy staplers. (Most designers driven by that philosophy “didn’t really rule the world,” Grinyer said. “They just ruled staplers.”) A few years ago, Grinyer had considered working with Vertu, the British-based cell-phone manufacturer, whose bejewelled but technologically ordinary products sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Vertu’s survival challenged the assumption that inevitable obsolescence removes modern consumer electronics from consideration as luxury goods. Ive was “very interested” in Vertu, Grinyer recalled.

Sharp edges aside, the rest of the case is fantastic. The buttons are tactile and easy to push, which unfortunately can’t be said of every case. Cutouts for the camera and fingerprint sensor are well-done, and the gloss black accents surrounding them are a nice touch. The Caseology logo is small and subtle, and the little feet on all four corners of the back prevent the back from getting scuffed up when you put it down. The inside has an interesting pattern to prevent dust from getting squished and possibly scratching your phone up, which an increasing number of cases have these days. The lip is large enough to clear a glass screen protector.

Note the complex mold shape and also the many holes, or passages, to allow the heat, pressure and water to mold the liner. Each of these molds must be made for a specific helmet and a helmet liner size:

In 2007, the year of the iPhone launch, the Ives bought an eleven-bedroom seventeenth-century house, with a lake, in rural Somerset, in the West of England. Ive had been at Apple for fifteen years; his children were nearing school age. When Ive and his wife were photographed among the tanned and lacquered guests at San Francisco fund-raisers, they looked palely handsome and a little puzzled, as if misdirected from the set of a Jane Austen adaptation. However, the rest of the case is not nearly as nice. While it is protective, it feels fairly cheap, like one of those $1 cases you’d buy off Alibaba. Half of it is glossy and half is matte, with textured grip areas going up and down the sides. The buttons are a major issue, as they’re raised from the rest of the case about half a nanometer. The texture on them is slightly different, but it’s not enough to make them stand out when you’re just trying to raise or lower the volume. I hit the wrong area when trying to press a button quite often while using this case. At least the cutouts are precise.

Coupe-inspired premium crossovers aim for a suave appearance, but the design often ends up looking awkward by trying too hard to mix utility with the sweeping rear of a true two-door. However, Land Rover’s new 2018 Range Rover Velar proves that fabulous styling is possible in the segment. The enhancements shown here have been attributed to the ability of in-plane variations in wall superheat to impart order to the resulting liquid and vapor flows, leading to high HTC and a delay in CHF. By reducing the superheat temperature in the vicinity of the low-conductivity materials, the epoxy divisions suppress nucleation and remain wetted during boiling.
