Jonathan Ive and the Future of Apple | Polycarbonate Embossed Sheet

I’m not calling for the return of stuffy, socially stratified fine dining. After all, today’s elite restaurants are often quite pricey, and people are eating out more than ever. Rather, I’d welcome a return of a more relaxed and serene dining experience, one in which I can hear my dinner companion, avoid drinking too much, and dodge a stress headache following an after-work drink.

The most striking characteristic of the MagCase is its material, aramid. Kevlar is based on this stuff, so it’s definitely pretty strong. That being said, the case is still very thin and doesn’t offer a lot of coverage, leading me to worry about how it’d fare in a drop. The lip doesn’t even extend past the display. The case has a nice soft-touch finish and it’s pretty lightweight, though it is somewhat of a fingerprint magnet.

Assuming the worst, Ive had a resignation letter in his pocket. Indeed, Jobs’s initial instinct had been to hire a new designer. He had approached Richard Sapper, who designed I.B.M.’s ThinkPad—a black cigar box. (Sapper was tempted, he told me, a little ruefully, but didn’t want to abandon his I.B.M. contract for a “tiny, tiny company.”) Jobs had also met with Hartmut Esslinger, who, as a consultant, was Apple’s industrial designer in the eighties. Esslinger, in an e-mail, recalled telling Jobs that Apple’s existing team, including Ive, “was very talented and competent if given the right leadership.” Esslinger, who has more design-guru swagger than Ive, also takes some credit for what happened next: he said that he encouraged Jobs to refocus the company on “evolving digital-consumer trends.”

The merger of fine and casual dining seems to show no signs of abating. As a result, even moderately quiet restaurants have become few and far between. Things have gotten so bad, there’s even an app for helping potential diners find quieter places to eat. The culinary establishment once aimed to dismantle the stuffiness and high cost of dining out by blurring the line between casual and fine dining, eliminating classist dress codes, and make dining a more collective experience. But ironically, that democratization of eating out has produced a new and more hidden tyranny: making people tolerate unhealthy, distracting noise for good food—and then duping them into spending more, drinking more (along with the risk of vulnerable situations that can result from alcohol), and shouting over the din to socialize. By comparison, the worst thing that could happen at one of the upscale establishments of old was using the wrong fork or running afoul of the dress code.

First things first: This screen protector is actually good. It requires a pretty complex process, more complex than I’ve ever had to go through for a screen protector, but it produces great results. The instructions are a bit hard to follow at times, and I did have to remove the glass from my phone and start over once, but I eventually was left with a near-perfect installation. You will have to set aside maybe half an hour to do it though, and you absolutely cannot rush it.

Toward the end of his life, Jobs told Walter Isaacson, “If I had a spiritual partner at Apple, it’s Jony. Jony and I think up most of the products together and then pull others in and say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’ He gets the big picture as well as the most infinitesimal details about each product. And he understands that Apple is a product company. He’s not just a designer. That’s why he works directly for me. He has more operational power than anyone else at Apple except me.” Richard Seymour, the British designer, described the bond between Jobs and Ive as one “between a savant-level aesthete and an incredible craft-capable practitioner.” According to Powell Jobs, “Steve wasn’t someone who sketched stuff. So he never felt that he actually designed everything. But I think that they both felt like things were made possible because of the two of them.” (Jobs and Ive had different dispositions, but perhaps shared a lack of social smoothness, and it seems fitting that one of their great joint achievements was to give digital distractions to people forced to ride in elevators with nodding acquaintances.)

While dbrand does sell a full-body skin, I installed the back-only one. dbrand sends both in regular purchases. I’m a much bigger fan of this version, as it’s easier to install and allows you to put a case over it. I currently have a Ringke Fusion over mine, and since the skin doesn’t add much thickness at all, the case is unaffected. Until dbrand starts shipping out its Grip cases, this is probably the best solution if you also want some protection.

Polycarbonate films are clear, general purpose thermoplastic polymer films. Flame retardant Polycarbonate films are specialty films used for applications such as electronic insulation and shielding. Flame retardant Polycarbonate films are usually laminated to a conductive foil, which is mostly made of Copper or Aluminium. This enables shields, which can be designed, to be placed near the emitting source without running the risk of internal arcing. Polycarbonate films are preferred as they are easy to die cut, with good adhesion to ink.

Looking from the front, the case looks a little strange around the cutouts, where there are little gaps in the white/black color with plain, clear TPU. You might not mind this, but it looks a little lazy to me. The buttons are of this clear variety as well, and they take much more effort than they should to push down. The back is very vulnerable to fingerprints, which is true of every other clear case. It’s difficult to put on and take off, and fits very tightly around the phone.
