Brunner and Ive had dinner in San Francisco a few days before Apple’s September announcement; they barely talked about the Beats deal. “I was telling my wife I’ll be home by ten o’clock,” Brunner said. “We were still drinking past twelve-thirty. I think he was blowing off a little steam.” (Stephen Fry said of Ive, “He loves a great hotel and a great wine.”) Ive was worn out, and preoccupied by the launch, and, Brunner said, by the thought of “doing something like this without Steve.” But they gossiped a little about designers, and Brunner was reminded of his former employee’s extreme thoroughness when Ive showed him drawings of “a perfectly radiused marble corner” for a future bathroom in Pacific Heights.

“Sometimes people really go crazy. You can work in your garage and have a refrigerator in there and a sound system. It’s what you dream up, really.”

One afternoon, Ive and Bart André removed the bottom panel of a MacBook laptop, revealing black and silver components arranged, with unnecessary orderliness, on a matte black circuit board. Ive looked down happily. “This is such an extraordinarily beautiful thing,” he said. André noted that, in a competitor’s computer, the board would be green. He sounded embarrassed on behalf of that other machine. On the same table was a plastic model of an existing Apple headphone—an EarPod—the size of a golf driver.

The good old Kensington lock slot is also still present on the L10 platform. It is now in the back of the device, where users also find almost two dozen screw inserts for industry standard mounts as well as the large variety of bolt-on attachments and add-ons that Xplore offers.

This work has shown that by imparting in-plane variations in surface temperature onto flat surfaces using low-conductivity materials, extreme increases in pool boiling heat transfer can be achieved. By tuning the wavelength of these variations to coincide with the capillary length of the fluid, a resonance-like enhancement effect is seen leading to a greater than 5x improvement in heat transfer rate at moderate superheats. The counterintuitive result by which heat transfer is increased with the addition of non-conductive materials is shown to be a product of the resulting flow field near the surface. By using temperature gradients to order the location of nucleation sites, as well as promote the formation of distinct pathways for liquid and vapor flows, HTC has been increased from 41 kW/m2K to 210 kW/m2K (at ΔT = 11 K) and CHF has been increased from 116 W/cm2 to 230 W/cm2. The principle of tailoring flow fields through variations in local surface temperature represents a novel and potentially transformative tool for the enhancement of boiling heat transfer in next-generation high heat flux applications. Bi-conductive surfaces not only produce substantial increases in performance (>5x increase in HTC shown here), but are also cheaply manufactured using traditional methods, scalable to large areas and various material, and do not contain fragile surface structures or thin coatings. As a result they are easily implementable and naturally insensitive to the degradation, mechanical failure, and fouling associated with other boiling enhancement approaches.

The luggage compartment delivers 34.4 cu ft of space behind row two. The 40:20:40 row-two seat features a ski-hatch enabling long items to be through-loaded, and with the rear seats folded flat, the Velar provides up to 70.1 cu ft of room from a load space measuring 70.7-in long by 49.1-in wide. Now, for a mid-range smartphone, this hardware should be more than enough, and indeed it is. For the most part, I found overall usage experience with the 8C to be quite good during my review period. Apps launch fast enough, split-screen multitasking works as expected, and even PUBG Mobile runs fine (albeit at the lowest settings). There are no issues as far as the core spec sheet is concerned.

Assuming the worst, Ive had a resignation letter in his pocket. Indeed, Jobs’s initial instinct had been to hire a new designer. He had approached Richard Sapper, who designed I.B.M.’s ThinkPad—a black cigar box. (Sapper was tempted, he told me, a little ruefully, but didn’t want to abandon his I.B.M. contract for a “tiny, tiny company.”) Jobs had also met with Hartmut Esslinger, who, as a consultant, was Apple’s industrial designer in the eighties. Esslinger, in an e-mail, recalled telling Jobs that Apple’s existing team, including Ive, “was very talented and competent if given the right leadership.” Esslinger, who has more design-guru swagger than Ive, also takes some credit for what happened next: he said that he encouraged Jobs to refocus the company on “evolving digital-consumer trends.”
