High-strength steels are used for selected rear body sections, and are joined to the adjacent aluminum panels with self-piercing rivets and structural adhesive. This clean and energy-efficient joining technology contributes to the body’s high torsional stiffness.

The day’s event included a ten-minute film. Ive’s reluctance to speak onstage has been offset by a willingness to appear in scripted videos. These productions—Ive speaking in earnest cadences, his head cocked forward like Pixar’s Anglepoise lamp—have become so well known that ikea recently parodied them, in an ad for its catalogue (“a device so simple and intuitive, using it feels almost familiar”). Such videos used to punctuate Jobs’s onstage message. In the absence of Jobs, they carry the message. Apple’s current leaders aren’t without public-speaking skills, but they can’t match Jobs’s charisma, which was fortified by a hint of menace, and their performances can evoke the awkward informality—the dancing in lanyards—of a corporate retreat. By contrast, the virtual Ive seems to emerge from the same orderly, decontaminated place as an Apple product. He appears “rational” and “inevitable,” to use the typical language. On Apple’s Web page of executive biographies, fourteen men and women give welcoming smiles; Ive, the in-house outsider, faces the camera with album-cover gravity.

In the spring of 1992, before a general election that the Labour Party was expected to win, after thirteen years of Conservative Party rule, Tangerine presented its bathroom at Ideal Standard’s headquarters, in Hull. Grinyer is still annoyed that the company rejected it. One complaint, he recalled, was that if the sink’s column fell it might kill a child; he thought that the column shared this attribute with other big ceramic objects.

The open-plan layout gives diners a sense of space; there’s the bar seating arranged along the curve of the pinewood, bigger tables flanking the cherry red wall to the left, and the central aisle reserved for quartets and trios. We couldn’t help but adore the cute framed prints of flora that dot the walls and pillars (how about putting some of that up purchase, Toast & Tonic?).

Most mid-range smartphones these days come with either metallic or glass casings, which is why the Honor 8C struck me as a bit of an oddity the moment I held it in my hand for the first time. It is made from plastic (or maybe polycarbonate?), but that’s not a bad thing at all. The 8C is a well-built smartphone, and one that has a solid in-hand feel. The plastic construction also helps in keeping the weight of the smartphone under control. Weighing in at 167 grams, the 8C feels surprisingly light for a smartphone with a 4,000mAh cell (more on this later) packed inside.

“Let’s get it done before we leave,” Meyers excitedly told the owner at the time. And before he knew it, he was taking the stacked and milled wood home—all 120 planks.

The FRE is surprisingly slim for what it is. I was expecting it to be bulky like an OtterBox, but LifeProof did an impressive job here, considering all the gaskets and extra protection needed to ensure water doesn’t make its way inside the case. It’s actually a two-part case. When you first take it out of the box, it looks like you should pull it apart from the USB port after opening that flap. However, it actually disassembles with the back as one very slim piece, so you should pull from the gap left by the lanyard insert. Interestingly, the fingerprint sensor is covered by what looks like saran wrap. It still allows your fingerprint to be processed without issue, but it’s cheap-looking and flimsy-feeling. The case is relatively easy to snap back together, but you really have to double-check to make sure the two parts are completely compressed without any gaps. Otherwise, you might be in for a nasty surprise.

The Wired article appeared that June. The next month, Jobs, who had left Apple twelve years earlier, and gone on to launch Pixar and NeXT, returned as Apple’s C.E.O., supplanting Gilbert Amelio. Jobs and Ive had an intense first meeting. Ive said, “I can’t really remember that happening really ever before, meeting somebody when it’s just like that”—he snapped his fingers. “It was the most bizarre thing, where we were both perhaps a little—a little bit odd. We weren’t used to clicking.”
