Surfaces were characterized using a custom-built test set-up as previously reported by Rahman et al.14,19. The setup consists of a copper heater block with PTFE insulation embedded with two cartridge heaters allowing for a maximum power of 1,000 W. Five T-type thermocouples were inserted into the copper block equally spaced 6 mm apart with the top most thermocouple located directly beneath the sample. The temperature measurements were recorded using NI DAQ system, where the average heat flux in the copper block was calculated using Fourier’s conduction law. The sample surface temperature was calculated by considering all of the relevant thermal resistances between the surface and the top most thermocouple, as described. A polycarbonate chamber was used as the water bath; with an immersion heater and thermocouple probe maintaining saturated conditions and atmospheric pressure. Degassed, deionized water was used as the working fluid, and all tests were carried out up to CHF. Visualization of the boiling process was conducted at low heat fluxes using a Phantom V210 high-speed camera (Vision Research) recorded at 3,100 fps. The surfaces were initially maintained at saturated condition for 1 hour after which a small increment of heat flux (2 W/cm2 to 5 W/cm2) was applied to the surfaces until the nucleation was observed. Heat flux was further increased up to 20 W/cm2 until the visibility of bubble dynamics becomes difficult. The chamber heater was turned off to minimize the bulk fluid motion while capturing the movies, with all movies being recorded within one minute to maintain saturation conditions, as described by Mukherjee and Dhir30 and Son et al.38.

Imagine you are looking through a sequence of photographs. One image after another, all of empty rooms. On superficial inspection, they all look the same. And they seem to show the same thing: nothing. No furniture, no people. Just empty rooms inside empty apartments. The rooms are clean and white. They look new. The light is diffuse, northern. Even the shadows it throws are soft. In one room is a floor of polished concrete, in another, wooden parquet. Sometimes there is a window visible, a patch of sky, a branch of a tree in leaf, hinting at summer, but not enough information to work out what city it is in. The walls sometimes seem to converge, or fall away from the lens. You look at the photographs a little more carefully. You are used to seeing 90° corners splayed out by wide angle lenses, but these odd angles are no artefact of perspective: these are spaces that are no longer exclusively defined by right angles, and abandoning that assumption leaves you a little displaced. The emptiness of the room is not the “subject” of these photographs, exactly. These are not studies of the geometry of empty spaces, because the images don’t encompass the whole room, but only reveal one corner at a time. Rather than on the void, the emphasis seems to be on thresholds, on openings. There’s often a doorway in front of you, and it’s usually slightly ajar. Cumulatively, the photographs convey the feeling of being in a labyrinth, or a first-person shooter for existentialists. As you flick, or scroll, through the pictures, you move from room to room in your imagination, but you never leave the building. You become disoriented.

Let’s start off with those little fake carbon fiber inserts, since they’re the first things you see. There’s one on the top and one on the bottom, and each features a satin finish with a subtle texture. I’m usually not a fan of imitation materials, but this is pretty well-done. It doesn’t look like they’ll ever start peeling up. There are also some gloss accents around those faux-CF pieces, which is a nice touch. The material of the rest of the case is TPU with a matte finish on top. This finish does a fantastic job of resisting fingerprints and keeping the case clean, but if you have dry hands (like many do at this time of year), it also makes them feel even drier. I’m not sure how exactly to explain this, but it’s just not very pleasant to hold for me.

Inside the shed, I tried on a watch, and its stainless-steel chain bracelet, guided by magnets, fell into place with the click of someone stacking nickels. That click, and one or two other immaculate couplings, had been the only sounds, apart from music, heard on a trailer-length “reveal” video that preceded the ten-minute film. The watch was months away from market—it will become available in April—and its display showed only a loop of dummy text and images.
