This year’s Live Case isn’t as much of a gadget, but a better case. It loses the (nifty?) NFC button that allowed you to trigger things such as your flashlight, but I always thought that was pretty poorly implemented given the sheer amount of pressure it took to activate. But the case itself, especially the double-layered version that I have here, is a better product overall. That being said, unless you’re really into customization, it’s still a poorer value than virtually any other case.

We also did the battery drawdown test with the Pentium N4200 unit, also with the 1,000 nits screen. Interestingly, despite the much lower Thermal Design Power of just 6 watts versus the 15 watts of the Core processor, power draw was between 3% and 9% higher. This may be due to the more sophisticated power savings technologies in 8th gen Core processors or it could simply be an optimization issue in preproduction units.

I liked the implementation Xiaomi has gone with – which is a lot more like what you’d find on an iPhone – in comparison to Google’s setup, but one gripe I had was with the ‘back’ gesture. That’s triggered by swiping in from either edge of the screen. Since Android apps more often than not hide a hamburger menu and require you to pull it out from the left side of the screen, you’ll find yourself going back instead of pulling out the menu more often than not. The same is true when you’re trying to swipe away notifications and instead end up closing the notification pane. To avoid that, Xiaomi reserves the lower half of the screen for the back gesture and the top half for the app but on a screen as large as this, it’s rather hard to successfully pull it off every time. As bezel-less displays become more common in the Android space, I really hope that either the app ecosystem will evolve vis a vis hamburger menus or that Xiaomi and others will be able to find a better implementation for gestures.

Ive’s dominance wasn’t immediate. His phrase may have been strategically irreverent—“We’ve never skinned anything,” Tim Cook told me in response—but it contained at least a partial truth. Ive gave the music player an irresistible white-and-silver form, causing a generation of designers to endure clients asking for the “iPod version” of this or that. (Richard Seymour, in London, recalled a meeting about the iPod of moisturizers.) But the industrial-design studio was not yet the company’s central workshop.
