High-speed imaging of nucleate boiling at ~10–15 W/cm2 on (a) a bare copper surface and bi-conductive surfaces with (b) N = 4 cm−1, (c) N = 6 cm−1, and (d) N = 12 cm−1 designs. For each bi-conductive surface, nucleation is seen in the center of the high-temperature copper and no lateral motion of the three-phase contact lines beneath vapor bubbles is observed. The low-temperature epoxy divisions remain wetted at all times providing ordered pathways near the surface for replenishing liquid to feed the bubble ebullition cycles. These cool photographs are not marketing for the building (that will be handled by others), nor are they a design tool. They are relics of a ritual. They document a separation. They depict the final state of the building before it is handed over to its owners, a kind of pre-occupancy survey. In this sense, they are mementos for the architects alone. Manifesting a particularly architectural way of visualizing space, they reflect what the architects wish to record of their own work. That they are then available to the public on websites is almost an afterthought, as evidence of having completed (or in German, vollendet, perfected) a project. The oblique relationship between the photographs and their audience makes them particularly interesting. Their uncanny homogenity is not rule based, nor determined by market pressures; it is close to spontaneous, a kind of symptom. Lacking any urgent function, their individual emptiness and collective form reveals to the viewer what they had anticipated of photography, or rather, reveals expectations by denying them. It was perhaps this capacity to be both designed and symptomatic that have made the images, and subsequently the Swiss Pavilion itself, so unsettling. The Swiss Pavilion can be understood as a built response to this research archive of images. This is not the only way to read the pavilion and its installation, but it is one way. In Svizzera 240, the viewer enters a space that looks just like one of the photographs. The visitor walks through rooms in which proportions were preserved, but not the scale, so that the visitor became alternately too big or too small for the rooms that they were in. Like an act of courtesy that unintentionally reveals an ulterior motive, or a film set seen from behind, the Swiss Pavilion quietly and unpolemically reveals both new levels of convention, even automatism, within design, as well as new domains of creative freedom.

While the hardware on the Pocophone F1 is simply among the best you can buy in the Android world currently, when it comes to software, it’s a bit more hit-or-miss. Here’s the thing: smart lights are fun, and that part doesn’t get talked about enough because then they become frivolous things you have to pay extra for. It’s why I love the Nanoleaf lights so much, there’s no real way to hide the fun parts of these lights. The original Aurora panels are functional, but they’re also just plain cool. And Nanoleaf continued to update them over time to do even better things, like interact with music and be remotely controlled with something other than your phone. I love using them for work, but I love using them even more for fun.

The Oh Joy! x Incipio case features a harder level of TPU than most clear cases. It’s still shock-absorbent and flexible, but it feels a lot more rigid in the hand. It also seems like it gets rid of the rainbow effect, which most manufacturers usually just get around with a hard plastic back. Incipio also claims that the back is scratch-resistant, which I didn’t really find to be true. Even pressing your fingernail too hard will leave a permanent mark, and keys will leave marks at almost any pressure. That being said, the clear back hides scratches fairly well, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

That’s because every aspect of a building’s design impacts the way it sounds: how the HVAC system is routed, the kind of wall insulation, the thickness of windows, and even how the electrical outlets are sealed. It’s a fussy, nuanced effort that’s inseparable from the architecture and construction of the space itself. A restaurant or shop that’s loud because the ceilings are too high or because there’s nothing separating kitchen or bar noise from areas for table seating has space-planning problems. They can’t be fixed by hanging some fiberglass panels to dampen the noise.

Unlike in the XSLATE D10 that had its battery underneath a cover bolted down with many small screws, the XSLATE L10 battery securely snaps into the backside of the tablet and is then locked in place. The springloaded sliding lock itself can be locked with a screw. The Li-Ion battery (7.6V, 4.770mAH, 36 watt-hours) has a rubber friction seal to keep dust and liquids away from the battery contacts and also the caddy with its dual micro-SIMs. Compared to its B10 predecessor, the L10′s battery can be exchanged for a fully charged spare in seconds. No need to power down either; the L10 has an internal 3.1 watt-hour bridge battery that provides plenty of power even for a very slow battery exchange.

The Atomic feels like an absolute tank in the hand. That’s mostly thanks to the beefy aluminum surround, which also has rubber extrusions on the bottom two corners and TPU on the top. It’s a dual-layer case to improve shock absorption, and it definitely feels like one. Compared with a normal case, the Atomic is noticeably wider, taller, and slightly heavier, meaning that it probably isn’t the best choice if you have smaller hands and already think the Pixel 2 XL is too big. The branding on the clear back is a little aggressive for my tastes, but it could be worse. All in all, I’m not a huge fan of the way the case looks, but I can see how it’d appeal to some.
