The Rugged Armor is one of Spigen’s newer product lines. These cases are easily identifiable by the two strips of faux-carbon fiber on the top and bottom. But while they’re simple for the most part, that’s all most people really need. If you just need a case (and maybe a little bit of added carbon fiber flair), the affordable Rugged Armor is a great choice.

Most mid-range smartphones these days come with either metallic or glass casings, which is why the Honor 8C struck me as a bit of an oddity the moment I held it in my hand for the first time. It is made from plastic (or maybe polycarbonate?), but that’s not a bad thing at all. The 8C is a well-built smartphone, and one that has a solid in-hand feel. The plastic construction also helps in keeping the weight of the smartphone under control. Weighing in at 167 grams, the 8C feels surprisingly light for a smartphone with a 4,000mAh cell (more on this later) packed inside.

The consultants then worked in collaboration with NELSON, the Philadelphia architectural firm responsible for the remedial retrofit project. “Considering the amount of hard surfaces, from an open metal deck to drywall walls to sealed concrete floors, it was easy to see why sound bounced around so quickly,” notes Scott Winger, AIA, Technical Director for NELSON.

Ive also designed a tablet computer. In 1989, Brunner had joined Apple, to lead its design team; by 1991, the company was close to releasing its first laptop, the PowerBook 100. In a commission whose true purpose was to persuade Ive to take a job at Apple, Brunner asked Tangerine to explore other concepts in mobile computing.

First a few words about Xplore Technologies Corp. of Austin, Texas. They have been making rugged tablet computers for over two decades and they have sold hundreds of thousands of them. It all started with the GeneSys line of ultra-ruggeds. In 2003 came the anvil-tough iX104 family that is now in its 6th generation. In 2013 Xplore introduced the Android-based RangerX tablet, followed by the Bobcat, a Windows version of the same platform. In early 2015 Xplore took over Motion Computing and added that tablet pioneer’s experience and their R12 and C5/F5 tablet products. Then came the XSLATEs B10 and D10, updated and more powerful versions of the Bobcat and RangerX. Last year Xplore pioneered the use of PCIe storage in rugged tablets. There’s a long history of of good design and innovation.

Without it, the site first opened to the public in 2015. It featured about 120,000 square feet of new or reconfigured exhibition space; a new cinema; a new two-story Miesian pavilion of wide open gallery spaces, called the Podium, the whole building clad in light, shimmery panels of foamed aluminum, an automotive and medical industry material also used for bomb blast absorption that looks a little like rough stone. There was even a 1950s-style Italian cafe straight out of a Wes Anderson movie.

The XSLATE L10 does have a fairly large number of exterior openings for all of its slots, ports, connectors, and batteries. That means a large number of seals that must be in perfect condition, and protective doors that must have intact seals and must be closed carefully. Xplore knows that and, in response, sealed all of the unit’s ports from the inside. That way, frequently used protective doors can remain open and accommodate cabling while still providing full sealing.

It’s also really hard to tell that it’s a wallet case, which adds to the security of it all. This just looks like a massively protective case. I’ve dropped it a couple of times, and it surely is protected. The volume and sleep/wake buttons are fully encased by the polycarbonate plastic mold, while the mute switch and headphone jack, Lightning port, and speaker on the bottom of my iPhone are open to the air enough for use; my headphones don’t require an adapter either — a welcome respite from the tyranny of overprotective iPhone cases. — Rob LeFebvre

Taylor, who was aware of the problem, has a pest control contractor treating each unit, including inside cupboards and drawers. The treatment makes some pest activity inevitable, he said, because it flushes insects out of the woodwork where they’re caught, sprayed and vacuumed.
