I was also worried about the buttons, but the KerfCase’s buttons are some of the best I’ve used. From what I can tell, they’re just small wood pieces glued to the suede lining of the inside, but they work very well. They’re extremely easy to push and very tactile. Branding is minimal, with some small "KERF" text embossed into the right side. My only real qualm with the case is what you can see from the front; since the lip doesn’t go around the front, you can spot the lining (including where it ends) and some less refined-looking stuff inside. It’s just not something you’d want to see, but this is the consequence of a one-piece design. I have read some reports of the wood cracking when the case is dropped, but I don’t believe it’s a huge issue given the warranty. If you own this case, chances are you own another that you can use even if you have to send it in. And if the case isn’t repairable, KerfCase will offer 50% off a new one.

I consider myself a pro at installing glass screen protectors, priding myself on making sure the screen is completely clean before gently laying the protector on. Yes, it’s stupid, but I personally can’t stand if the screen protector has even the teensiest bit of dust or if it’s misaligned by half a degree. As a result, I was pretty proud of myself when I nailed the installation the first time. But while I was installing it, I noticed that only the edges had adhesive, much like (crappy) glass screen protectors I’d experienced in the past with phones like the Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy S8+. I decided to give the ZAGG a shot anyway.

Up front, you have the 6.18-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2246×1080. The screen is bright and crisp, with vibrant colours. It’s not AMOLED, which means you won’t get those battery-loving deep blacks, but it should be good enough for most people. It can also get ungodly bright, which translates into the screen being clearly visible even under direct sunlight.

However, all this rubber does make putting your phone into your pants pocket a bit more difficult, and it may not even fit in smaller pockets. But that’s the trade-off you have to make with a case this protective. Cutouts are all accurate, and the rubber around the fingerprint sensor hole actually makes scanning your fingerprint comfortable. Branding on the exterior is limited to a small ‘Speck’ logo on the top right of the back.

Figure 2 shows representative images extracted from high-speed imaging, showing nucleate boiling on bi-conductive surfaces with various values of N. Complete movies can be found in the supplemental material. All of the surfaces tested exhibited similar incipience temperatures, with the onset of nucleate boiling occurring around ΔT ~ 5–7 K. It can be seen that bubbles form exclusively on the copper regions, with the low-temperature epoxy divisions suppressing the nucleation process as expected. More importantly, the epoxy divisions remain wetted at all times and resist the lateral motion of bubbles across them. This allows for the formation of ordered pathways for liquid return above the cold epoxy divisions. Figure 3 shows the measured boiling curves, and heat transfer coefficient as a function of superheat for each surface tested. The bare copper surface reached a CHF of ~116 W/cm2 with a maximum HTC of ~70 kW/m2K. This closely matches the results from various other researchers, demonstrating the accuracy of the experimental apparatus1,11,20. Substantial increases in boiling performance can be seen for nearly all of the bi-conductive surfaces as compared to bare copper. At moderate superheats (ΔT = 10–11 K), an increase in heat flux and heat transfer coefficient of greater than 5x has been demonstrated using bi-conductive surfaces with a pitch of P = 2.33 mm (N = 4 cm−1). While the incipience temperature does not vary substantially for any of the surfaces tested, heat transfer is increased due to enhanced bubble dynamics on the bi-conductive surfaces. This demonstrates that the addition of epoxy does not enhance HTC by promoting nucleation at lower superheats, as shown for structured surfaces and surfaces with mixed wettability1,9,11,20,22,23,25.
