A door briefly opened, and I saw flashes of color pinned to a wall. (This, Ive later explained, was the conference room where the Apple Watch film was being storyboarded.) Then we stopped in Ive’s office, a twelve-foot square separated from the studio by a glass wall. On shelves, Ive had set his Playmobil likeness and similar gifts, along with dozens of custom sketchbooks that had padded blue covers and silver edging. On the floor, behind a Marc Newson desk, was a rugby ball. Overlapping framed images leaned against the wall: a Banksy print of the Queen with the face of a chimpanzee, and a poster, well known in design circles, that begins, “Believe in your fucking self. Stay up all fucking night,” and ends, many admonitions later, “Think about all the fucking possibilities.”

That change might be harder than it sounds. It took decades for quiet, contemplative dining to give way to today’s raucousness. That’s because the physical construction of restaurants had to change in tandem with the culture supporting it.

The final product ended up pretty nice for the most part, though I did have one corner that refused to fully adhere to the phone. The triangles on the back demonstrate a level of craftsmanship that can’t be found on a plastic case, and the Toast branding on the bottom is subtle. I wasn’t able to install the front skin due to the glass screen protector I had, but I wouldn’t have done so anyway as it makes the screen harder to swipe on. The cutouts for the camera and the fingerprint sensor, as well as those for the buttons, were accurate. The design definitely made the phone eye-catching, but I had a hard time dealing with all the sharp corners that inherently come with wood products.

All that is well and good, but my favorite part of the case is the kickstand. It’s easy to open (as long as you have at least some fingernails) and can be set up at 110-degree and 150-degree angles. For such a simple little plastic addition, it makes a huge difference for multimedia consumption. These need to be on every case. Speaking of the kickstand, there is some small ‘Spigen’ branding on it… and under it… and Spigen’s slogan, ‘Something You Want!’ on the bottom of the kickstand. The only other bit of branding is some small ‘Tough Armor’ text on the right side.

If you’re looking for protection and relatively good looks on a budget, you may be considering Caseology’s Legion to install on your shiny new Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL. Like its very noble-sounding name suggests, it’s a strong, protective case. It’s also pretty good-looking, though it isn’t without a few minor flaws.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist and Intelligent Emergency Braking reduces driver workload when cruising on the highway or driving in traffic2. ACC maintains a set cruising speed, and/or a driver-selectable gap to the vehicle ahead if the leading vehicle’s speed is lower. The technology is further designed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop when the vehicle ahead does. If the driver then presses the accelerator, the system will assist the vehicle in pulling away and track the vehicle in front all the way up to the chosen speed setting, where conditions allow. If the system detects that a potential frontal collision with another vehicle may occur, it will display an alert to warm the driver to brake. If the driver doesn’t react, the system is designed to engage the brakes to mitigate the result of the potential impact2.

This case will be useless and pointlessly restrictive for 95% of the population, but for the 5% that do live a super rugged lifestyle and need a case that is anything-proof, the LifeProof FRE is a good buy. The MSRP of $89.99 is a little absurd, but the going price of around $50 on Amazon is much more reasonable. Of course, it’s still noticeably more expensive than regular cases, but it’s also much more capable.

Here’s the new X-Lite X-402 GT on the left and the new Nolan N71 on he right. Both of these helmets have removable chin guards and are homologated as both full- and open-face helmets. They are European helmets only unfortunately.
