I learned a lot about how both types of helmets are made and I also learned that one shell type isn’t necessarily better than the other — there are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Surfaces were characterized using a custom-built test set-up as previously reported by Rahman et al.14,19. The setup consists of a copper heater block with PTFE insulation embedded with two cartridge heaters allowing for a maximum power of 1,000 W. Five T-type thermocouples were inserted into the copper block equally spaced 6 mm apart with the top most thermocouple located directly beneath the sample. The temperature measurements were recorded using NI DAQ system, where the average heat flux in the copper block was calculated using Fourier’s conduction law. The sample surface temperature was calculated by considering all of the relevant thermal resistances between the surface and the top most thermocouple, as described. A polycarbonate chamber was used as the water bath; with an immersion heater and thermocouple probe maintaining saturated conditions and atmospheric pressure. Degassed, deionized water was used as the working fluid, and all tests were carried out up to CHF. Visualization of the boiling process was conducted at low heat fluxes using a Phantom V210 high-speed camera (Vision Research) recorded at 3,100 fps. The surfaces were initially maintained at saturated condition for 1 hour after which a small increment of heat flux (2 W/cm2 to 5 W/cm2) was applied to the surfaces until the nucleation was observed. Heat flux was further increased up to 20 W/cm2 until the visibility of bubble dynamics becomes difficult. The chamber heater was turned off to minimize the bulk fluid motion while capturing the movies, with all movies being recorded within one minute to maintain saturation conditions, as described by Mukherjee and Dhir30 and Son et al.38.

The rest of the case doesn’t get much better. The back seems to be privy to the rainbow effect, even if it is less prevalent than on clear TPU cases. The buttons are just cutouts with tall surrounds, making them very hard to push. The fingerprint sensor cutout is large, but that means that it produces somewhat of a strange visual effect over the glass portion of the back. It honestly feels like some sort of jewelry piece, but that is not what you need out of a case.

For starters, the main selling point of the case – the leather – feels like cardboard. If someone on the street randomly handed me this, I’d think it were faux leather. It’s rock-hard, and there appears to only be a thin layer of it. Adding onto the crappy feel is an extremely cheap-feeling black frame that is the opposite of confidence-inspiring. The bottom is left wide open, and the lip on the front is almost nonexistent.

It takes a lot of skill to apply a decal to the very complex curved surface of a motorcycle helmet and, of course, the surface must be perfectly prepared. The decal must be carefully applied and all of the air bubbles removed or the entire helmet will be ruined after it is painted.

The rim of the phone consists of an aluminium framey, with the two volume buttons and the power button on the right. In the case of the Pocophone, its biggest selling point is that it provides exactly the kind of performance you’d expect from a $1,000 flagship for the cost of one of those lower-end devices. There’s also some liquid cooling technology to ensure heat dissipation is a cut above most other phones. What all of this results in is a phone that packs a punch that is way above its class and is simply fast and fluid, regardless of what you throw at it.
