You’re not going to find a smooth-feeling glass back on the phone, or, indeed, most of the design bells and whistles other phones may have. That’s not entirely a bad thing, as the polycarbonate back is plenty sturdy and comfortable enough to hold in hand. The graphite black model I was provided looks…okay, but it’s certainly not going to win any awards for its good looks.

The Parallax isn’t my favorite Caseology case, but it’s still a good one. It’s a full $2 more expensive than the Vault (which will be mentioned below) and adds some niceties, including a more interesting texture, several color options, and more. I liked the implementation Xiaomi has gone with – which is a lot more like what you’d find on an iPhone – in comparison to Google’s setup, but one gripe I had was with the ‘back’ gesture. That’s triggered by swiping in from either edge of the screen. Since Android apps more often than not hide a hamburger menu and require you to pull it out from the left side of the screen, you’ll find yourself going back instead of pulling out the menu more often than not. The same is true when you’re trying to swipe away notifications and instead end up closing the notification pane. To avoid that, Xiaomi reserves the lower half of the screen for the back gesture and the top half for the app but on a screen as large as this, it’s rather hard to successfully pull it off every time. As bezel-less displays become more common in the Android space, I really hope that either the app ecosystem will evolve vis a vis hamburger menus or that Xiaomi and others will be able to find a better implementation for gestures.

The molding process for the helmet shells and the face shields is very similar, with only a different shape mold to make the visors.

Unless you’re really into mobile phone photography, I don’t imagine many of you would have heard of Moment before, but it’s been doing this sort of thing for a few years now. For the Pixel 2 XL, Moment has actually gotten ‘made for Google’ certification for the Photo Case. I can tell why, though; the case just feels so damn premium. The rubberized texture on the exterior feels fantastic in the hand and adds grip. The stained and wax-coated dark walnut insert (you can also get black canvas) looks and feels great. Not only does it add a unique touch, Moment also says the texture also allows for easier one-handed shooting. I guess that kind of makes sense, but it’s more about the look to me. The interior is lined with microsuede, which adds just a bit more protection.

Boiling heat transfer is used in many applications, including the production of electricity, chemical processing, and high-heat flux thermal management. Due to its prevalence, and the important role it plays in numerous industries, the enhancement of boiling heat transfer has been studied for decades. During boiling, heat is transferred from a hot surface to a cooler fluid by (1) evaporation across liquid-vapor interfaces, (2) transient conduction, and (3) the micro-convection generated by the nucleation, growth, and departure of vapor bubbles1,2. The efficiency of boiling is quantified by the heat transfer coefficient (HTC), defined as the ratio of the surface heat flux to the superheat temperature, the temperature difference between the solid and the saturated fluid. During boiling, there is a finite rate at which heat can be dissipated from any surface. This maximum is the critical heat flux (CHF). CHF, also referred to as the boiling crisis, occurs when the production of vapor cannot be adequately balanced by the amount of liquid returning to the heated surface. When this occurs the surface undergoes dry-out, where an insulating layer of vapor blankets the solid surface. This leads to an immediate, uncontrollable, and drastic increase in surface temperature with dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences, such as the destruction of electronic components or the meltdown of a nuclear reactor.
