The vinyl skin game is one that dbrand’s dominated for many years now. There’s a good reason for that; the Lamborghini-obsessed company offers good quality and a ton of customization. I’ve had a couple on previous phones, and while I usually opt for a case instead for increased protection, I’d always appreciate the extra eye candy that a skin provides.

Boral TruExterior trim and siding material is made of fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal, along with a proprietary blend of polymers. According to Boral, it is nearly impervious to moisture and termites, and is suitable for ground and masonry contact. What that means, essentially, is that many of the accommodations that builders make to keep wood siding safe from rot—such as leaving gaps where the siding runs into rooflines or horizontal surfaces—don’t apply to this product. If it does what they say it does, there’s a lot to like. Time will tell.

The case’s overall quality is very impressive. Carving a case out of a single block of wood is no easy task, and the result is an expensive-feeling finished product. The wood is completely smooth to the touch, and there’s zero chance that it’ll give you splinters. That might sound silly, but the Moment case’s wood isn’t nearly as smooth and, consequently, it’s a little less confidence-inspiring in that regard. I did notice one corner where the wood maybe wasn’t as well-sanded down as it could have been, but it’s not at all noticeable in use. The cutouts are adequately-sized and line up perfectly, which I had some worries about on a wooden case.

At nearly 6.2 inches it is definitely quite large, and a little hard to handle single-handedly. I found it to be an adjustment moving from the one-handed comfort of the Nokia 6.1 Plus to the Pocophone F1, but the larger screen is a boon when it comes to watching videos and playing games. The screen also has a notch, though Pocophone did at least manage to fit in a second speaker and an IR sensor in there. Joining the two is the front camera in the same spot, so there may be something to be said for the benefits of having a notch.

The system is built around a single-speed transfer case featuring a multi-plate wet clutch and a chain drive to the front axle. Designed to be compact and quiet in operation, the transfer case’s main advantage is its speed: depending on conditions it can make the transition from 100 percent rear bias to fully locked in only 165 milliseconds; transient torque delivery to the front axle can take as little as 100 milliseconds. This makes the AWD system incredibly responsive, which delivers exceptional performance in various conditions2.

Reviewing the Pocophone F1 is a…confusing job. It’s an almost Frankenstein’s monster-like contraption, forcing together best-in-class performance with the frugality of the cheapest of budget smartphones. There aren’t really too many other devices for me to compare it to, making it a rather unique curiosity in the vein of the OnePlus One when it was first revealed.
