Three years ago, Ive’s responsibilities expanded to include software as well as hardware. He took charge of what Apple calls Human Interface: typefaces, icons, swipes, taps. Before, the alerts had mostly a strained, jokey relationship with the real world, as suggested by such names as Duck, Choo Choo, and Doorbell. iOS7 introduced refined snatches of electronica created, in part, by Hugo Verweij, a Dutch sound designer who, before being hired by Ive, had a Web site selling “minimalist ringtones.” (On his blog, Verweij had expressed bafflement with Apple’s “loud and crappy” sounds.) Some Apple customers may have found the new tones unappealing—too modish, or too European—and they may have switched back to the goofy, “classic” sounds that had been relegated to a lower-rung menu. But others may have had the thought, or the half-thought, that the sounds made the phones more coherent—a more natural accompaniment to glass, aluminum, and Helvetica Neue.

As a big fan of Apple’s leather cases, I was excited to check out what Bellroy had in store for the Pixel 2. Since these ~$50 cases are sold on the Google Store and the packaging proudly sports the ‘made for Google’ designation, you’d imagine that the case would be at least halfway decent, but I’m appalled at how poorly it’s made.

Taking the case off and putting it back on is easy, but not so much so that it’ll separate from the phone in a drop. My only real gripe with it overall is the exposed bottom, which could potentially lead to disaster in the wrong circumstances. Oh, and if you get it dirty, you’ll have to hand wash it due to the fabric nature of the case. You can’t just wipe stuff off of it like you would with any other case, so if you’re a messier person, you might want to avoid this one.

You’re not going to find a smooth-feeling glass back on the phone, or, indeed, most of the design bells and whistles other phones may have. That’s not entirely a bad thing, as the polycarbonate back is plenty sturdy and comfortable enough to hold in hand. The graphite black model I was provided looks…okay, but it’s certainly not going to win any awards for its good looks.
All things considered, this is a nice case with an interesting design. $16.99 ($15.99 for the Pixel 2) won’t break the bank, though I’d stay away if you have smaller hands purely because it is a bit wider than most other cases of this caliber. It sounds silly, I know, but I have fairly large hands and the phone legitimately feels larger and a little harder to hold with this case on. It also comes in ‘Kinda Blue’ for an extra dollar, if that’s more your speed.
